It’s 2019, and Pages for Mac (Previously iWork) is still a great resource for creating business marketing materials. Apple has done a great job of improving Pages over the years and including updated templates that you can use to create great looking documents with little to no design skills. Templates can also be downloaded and imported into Pages and can be used alongside the Apple templates. We have updated our list of very useful free templates, and some paid templates, so you can quickly create your presentation and get your business done.

iWorkCommunity
iWorkCommunity is a little outdated, but the templates still work. All of their free templates have been submitted by Pages users just like you. This website has more basic templates but they are great for layouts. Whenever we redesign our business card, I start with a blank layout from iWorkCommunity so I have printable full-size sheets to take to the print shop.

Jumsoft – Inspiration Set
Inspiration Set presents a fine kit of 250 templates for Apple’s Pages, from business cards and posters to brochures and books. Most templates contain multiple sections, which results in a total of over 700 layouts. This wide variability offers countless options for immediate customization, helping you impress clients, colleagues, and friends.

Graphic Node – Pages Templates
Graphic Node has an easy to use template system you can download from the Mac App Store to easily import templates into Pages for Mac. This makes it easy to get started. With over 10,000 free templates, you can easily find something that fits your needs. They also have a paid version that provides even more customizable templates.

Which invoice template format should I use?

You have a few different choices when selecting a template. Each has it’s benefits and trade offs. Let’s go through them one by one:

Word or Google Docs

Microsoft Word is designed for general documents such as letters and reports. You can usually make quite good looking documents in Word. However it can be quite a pain to add line items, totals and calculate taxes. It can be quite difficult and frustrating to initially create your template, so make sure you start with an existing template.

I’ve often struggled with making a Word doc that looks the way I want it to. There are always some unseen and immovable margins at work. Do yourself a favour and skip making a template from scratch. Instead use one of the many free invoice templates provided here.

Excel or Google Sheets

Some recommend using Excel instead of Word, because of it’s automatic formulas. Excel makes it quite easy to add up your totals and measure taxes. You can set up a table with items and formulas with little effort.

However Excel falls short on the visuals. It’s very hard to make the invoice look professional, even when using professionally designed invoice templates. One of the main drawbacks is that it’s quite difficult to adjust column widths in Excel without impacting the whole document. This is because everything is inside one large table. You also don’t have access to the full range of styling options available in Word.

If you’re running a business, you understand that it’s always important to look at the big picture. With invoices, it’s not just about making the invoice itself. For example:

  • You’ll want to know which invoices have been paid, are due or overdue.
  • You want to track how much money you’ve earned each month/year for planning and tax purposes.
  • There are times were you need to refer back to an old invoice, searching through files is quite frustrating.
  • When it comes to getting paid you want to be able to accept credit cards and online payments.

Word and Excel both fail when it comes to the above tasks. Free invoice templates are a great way to get started, but it takes more to run a business.

Other Software

There are people out there who don’t use any of the above options. I’ve heard of people using Photoshop, Indesign or Acrobat editable PDFs. Usually among photographers and designers who already have access to and use these tools for work.

These products all work fine if you’ve a made the template already. However they’re very energy intensive when you want to change something, for example your address or corporate color. Other problem is that the templates are very inflexible, for example if you have a line item that requires more space than usual, you’re out of luck.

But what are the different types of invoices that small businesses can put to use?

There are plenty of different invoice versions you can use to get paid. These are the five most common types of invoices for small business:

  1. Pro forma invoices are often used instead of an estimate — they show how much the project will be.
  2. Interim invoices are used for larger projects, breaking them down into smaller installments.
  3. Recurring invoices are used for retainers and other ongoing relationships.
  4. Past due invoices are sent out as a sharp reminder that the customer still owes on the invoice.
  5. Final invoices are the most common type of invoice, indicating that a project has been completed and payment is due.
