These instructions are for installing VirusScan 8.6 on Mac OS X 10.4.6through Mac OS X 10.5.8 only. VirusScan 8.6 is not supported on Mac OS X 10.6.

About VirusScan

VirusScan for Mac is an anti-virus application that helps you keep yourApple computer free of viruses, Trojan horses and other malware.VirusScan for Mac features On-Demand scanning, On-access scanning,scan and update scheduling, automatic DAT updating, and drag-and-dropscanning.

VirusScan for Mac also integrates with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator,versions 3.6.1 and 4.0 to provide you with a single point of controlfor your systems running VirusScan for Mac software. The VirusScan forMac design is based on Cocoa, the specialized Mac OS X applicationenvironment.

System Requirements
  • To install VirusScan for Mac software, you require a PowerPC or Intelbased Mac computer, Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.6 to 10.4.11) or Mac OS XLeopard (10.5 to 10.5.8) Operating system, 512 MB or higher) RAM,minimum 90MB of free disk space.
  • VirusScan for Mac integrates with ePolicy Orchestrator versions 3.6.1,and 4.0.

Note
VirusScan for Mac 8.6.1 does not co-exist with any other third partyanti-virus software.
Any such instance may result in unexpected issues.
  • Ensure that you uninstall Non-Windows Agent (NWA) if already installedon your computer. In the Terminal window, type the following commandand press Enter:
  • If you do not uninstall NWA before installing VirusScan for Mac 8.6.1,an alert appears at the initial stage of the installation processprompting you to uninstall NWA.
  • The VirusScan for Mac installation stops if you have installed Norton,VirusBarrier or Sophos Anti-Virus software on your Mac OS X machine.Even after you uninstall Norton, VirusBarrier or Sophos, there might befiles that remain on your system that cause problems when you try toinstall VirusScan for Mac. To resolve this issue, remove the followingfiles (if they exist) before you continue to install the product.

Downloading VirusScan

VirusScan is one of Iowa State's Site-Licensed software packages.

If you are faculty, staff or a student at Iowa State, you can downloadthe VirusScan installer fromhere (142.2 MB).You will need your Iowa State Net-Id and password to download thissoftware from the Iowa State Site-Licensed Software Server.

Upgrading VirusScan

You can upgrade to VirusScan 8.6 from earlier VirusScan versions (8.0and 8.5). After the upgrade, the preferences are migrated from theearlier versions to the current version (v8.6).

Installing VirusScan

If the downloaded disk image wasn't automatically mounted, thendouble-click on the disk image to mount it.

Then perform these steps:

  1. Double-click on VirusScan.mpkg to start the Installer.
  2. Follow the on-screen steps to install the software.
  3. Read and accept the license agreement. If you do not acceptthe license agreement, the installation cannot continue.
  4. Click Install to perform the installation.

    VirusScan for Mac 8.6.1 can be managed through the McAfee ePolicyOrchestrator management software. The versions supported are:

    • ePolicy Orchestrator 3.6.1
    • ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0

    However, please note that the use of ePolicy Orchestrator is optionaland VirusScan for Mac can be used as a standalone product.

    The 'Standard Install' will install both:

    • McAfee Agent for Mac OS X
      The McAfee agent is installed on target client computers and serverswhere it gathers and reports data, enforces policies and tasks, andsends events back to the ePolicy Orchestrator server. The agent runs inthe background on client computers. It retrieves changes to policiesand tasks from the ePolicy Orchestrator server, then executes thepolicies, and performs all scheduled tasks. When activity relating toproducts occurs on the client computer, the agent notifies the server.For example, if a virus appeared on the client computer, theinformation is sent back to the ePolicy Orchestrator console. Thisactivity is invisible to the user of the client computer.
    • VirusScan for Mac
      VirusScan for Mac is an anti-virus application that helps you keep yourApple computer free of viruses, Trojan horses and other malware.Itscans files and folders and provides detailed reports on what it finds.

      It integrates with ePolicy Orchestrator enabling you to manageanti-virus policies, view reports, anti-virus events or virusactivities in an enterprise environment. Using ePolicy Orchestrator,you can configure VirusScan for Mac on the target systems across yournetwork.

    To change the the 'Standard Install', click on the 'Customize' button.

  5. The Authentication dialog box appears.
  6. Type your administrative credentials and click OK.
  7. A message notifies you when the installation completes. Click OK.
  8. Restart your computer after installing VirusScan. This will ensurethat all VirusScan components start properly.

VirusScan.pkg file to run the installer. The VirusScan installerinstalls the application inside the /Applications folder.

Uninstalling VirusScan

You can uninstall VirusScan by using the uninstall file (VirusScanUninstall.command) that is included in the downbloaded disk image.

To uninstall VirusScan:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Double-click the VirusScan Uninstall.command icon.
    • Drag the VirusScan Uninstall.command icon, drop it inthe Terminal window and press Enter.

      To open the Terminal application, double-click the applicationlocated under /Application/Utilities.

  2. When prompted to do so, type your administrator password andpress Enter. (No characters display when you type your password.)

When the uninstallation process completes successfully, a messagedisplays in the Terminal window to show the VirusScan software has beenremoved from your computer.
